Our work
This was our first TV advert filmed for Darlington College. It was designed as a mashup to demonstrate the wide variety of courses available, with upbeat music to give it impact.
We wanted to do another mashup of the college and tell the story of a day in the life. But this time we wanted to shake things up a bit! Using a GoPro, we filmed a POV shot of a student studying in different classes, including a complicated shot of a student looking at themselves in the mirror - with no sign of a camera being there. Adam Walker even made it into this TV advert - as the student jumping from the top diving board in the Dolphin Centre in Darlington.
This was Hubspoke Media's first attempt at using stop-motion animation on a project, all filmed in our studio. The set-up was a large white sheet on our office floor, a DSLR on a C-stand to capture the advert one frame at a time, and 2 very patient actors! When all the shots were taken (over 1000 in total), we edited each frame and compiled them into a video project, adding music and other effects. The shot of the van was an actual large-scale cutout that we had the actors sit under. We later had to remove the stands by hand in Photoshop. It was a complex project, but the outcome speaks for itself.
In 2025, we were challenged again by Darlington College to create another stop-motion animation, but this time on a smaller (yet just as complicated!) scale. This time, we utilised a stop-motion puppet, filmed against a green screen, which was then composited onto handcrafted backgrounds. This project flexed our skills by creating animatics, building puppets, and producing over 50 hand-felted props and backgrounds! It was a fun project to work on, and we hope we get to work on even more in the future.
