BCS Website – Case Study

At the end of 2024, Hubspoke Media started working with BCS Render, offering marketing support. This comprised of media sessions and posting to social media across their channels. Since then, we have worked with BCS on branding and building them a new website. Find out how we helped them expand their reach through multi-channel marketing in the blog below.

A bit about the client

BC Stewart was founded in 1975 in Darlington as a plastering business for residential, commercial, and private projects. The business, over its 50-year lifespan, has adjusted, changed and grown into many forms, but its values and work ethic have stayed the same. BC Stewart became BCS Render, and then BCS Renewables was also launched at the start of 2025. At the end of that same year, BCS came to us after working on their social media for help building a new website as they launched a new name, BCS Group.

This new name covers all parts of the business and keeps everything in one place instead of across multiple websites. They were operating under the BCS Renewables brand and had an associated website. It was time, however, for the brand to expand its scope in marketing and the decision to operate under BCS Group was made. Hubspoke Media were asked to create a new website for the new brand to operate under.

The Project

The website needed to be, much like BCS Group itself, a one-stop shop for all information users would need to know about their business. It had to cover their main services (render, retrofit, renewables, void properties and refurbishment) as well as tell users who they were.

Hubspoke Media is a big believer that 1 picture can tell 1000 words, so making sure that we used high-quality media to give the site personality was a must. The website also had to be easy to navigate and understand so that users could find what they needed fast and efficiently (so not too many pages!)

Discovery Session – “Is this you?”

A discovery session is a brilliant way for us to get to know the businesses we are working with. If we don’t understand what they do, how they work or how they want to come across to the public, then we have no hope of building anything that truly represents them.

Fortunately, we had worked with BCS Render and BCS Renewables for a year and knew enough about them to get a list of pages and services on the website. We also had images from media sessions, which demonstrated a range of skills the team had. With these 2 things, we managed to put together a wireframe version of the site.

This means Hubspoke Media had created the pages and menus, banners and other visual assets before sitting in the room with the team for their discovery session.

During the discovery session, Hubspoke Media needed to know the following things about BCS and what they represent:

  • Who do BCS serve?
  • What services do BCS offer?
  • Explain what BCS do as if it were to an 11-year-old (and they must understand!)

There were a few other focused questions, but that last point is usually a great place to start! If you can’t explain who you are and what you do to an 11-year-old, then you don’t have an easy and memorable way of selling yourself (in our view).

We worked on this with the team and ultimately came up with “Your Principal Contractors”, a great way to describe not just individual services, but an overarching blanket statement of “no matter the job, we will manage it to completion”. This is often needed when organisations deliver multiple project types.

The Copy

Website copy are the words that make up a website. This includes titles, headings, subheadings, paragraphs and alt text. Coming from the word “copywriting”, copy uses strategy and persuasive text to keep the reader on the website but also gives them the information they need to take the next steps.

Those next steps might be exploring more of the website, or it could be filling in a contact form. The copy is crucial to the user’s experience, as bad copy could lead to a potential customer jumping ship.

We wrote up copy based on the discovery session and got it to a place we were happy to share with the client and ultimately say, “Is this you?”

This may seem like an odd question, but sometimes business owners are too close to their businesses. They know what their business is because they work in it every single day. But when someone else is trying to summarise it, the words can often look very different to what is in their heads. It often leads to them reflecting on their business, and corrections are welcomed! Hubspoke Media want to make sure that your business is represented accurately.

High-quality media

As was mentioned previously, we already had a bank of imagery taken from media sessions earlier in the year. When working projects, it’s common to use a lot of completed photographs of properties to show off what the business is capable of.

Whilst this is needed, it’s also important to get photos of the people ‘on the tools’. Users engage more with people, so having behind-the-scenes shots of workers plastering a wall or installing a solar panel meant that we could tell those stories with just a few images. The images show that the team are capable of big projects and has a good work ethic.

These images can then be used as banners, carousel cards, blog images and more throughout the website so that it all looks consistent and on brand. We also thought it was important to take headshots of the team at BCS and have those on the site in an “About Us” section. Whilst not crucial to every website, being able to see the people behind the branding and slogans makes the business feel more approachable. It also gives customers an anchor for who they are going to be working with in future.

One of the reasons for this new site is to bring together all aspects of the business into one cohesive brand, and part of that rebrand needed a new logo. It was discussed early on that the client liked the original “BCS” logo, and it was consistent for them to include the subtitle underneath. With this in mind, we sent across multiple variations of the design, which played with spacing, font choices and colour – ultimately going with the logo below.

Amendments and sign-off

Before we send anything to the client, the team at Hubspoke Media does several rounds of checks on the site to ensure it’s working correctly and is accessible to everyone. In a recent video, we mentioned Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which are the official guidelines on optimising your website so that anyone (no matter of ability) can use your website. This includes things such as:

  • All text is readable (no white text on a white background, etc)
  • Pages are navigable
  • Keyboard Navigation
  • Optimised for mobile

Ensuring our website is accessible allows anyone to use it. It also helps the website rank higher (if optimised for SEO), meaning it will appear on more related searches. Other things we are looking to check are:

  • Spelling mistakes
  • Bad links
  • Large file sizes
  • Pages look correct on mobile

After we were happy with version 1 of the site, we sent it across to the client to approve and check that they were being represented correctly. They would also check for similar non SEO errors, and with a few amendments, we had the site live and ready to use. Check out BCS Group’s new website here
