How To Narrow Down and Engage with a Target Audience

Understanding your target audience and being able to communicate with them efficiently is one of the most important things you can do when trying to build an efficient marketing strategy.  If you want more information on how to define your target audience and communicate with them effectively, read this blog!

Defining your Target Audience

Defining your target audience is the very first step to creating an efficient marketing strategy, and you can easily identify your target audience by asking yourself, “What problem do they have, and what is my solution to it?”  This helps you understand how your services can benefit a specific group of people and how that can change from one group to another.

Start by analysing who already interacts with your business and what this group has in common. Looking at this group of people and analysing their data can help you understand more about their age, job, interests, and even their online habits, and eliminate any guessing, giving you real data to work with. This information can help you tailor your services and pitching techniques to a specific group rather than keeping them broad-spectrum.

The 4 types of Target Audience

There are 4 main types of target audience, and each one is very important in helping you reach the correct audience.

  • Demographic – This includes age, gender, education, and income. You might use this data to reach a target audience aged 25-35 with a degree.
  • Geographic – This is your target audience’s location. If you want to open a shop locally, you would look at a target audience that lives locally.
  • Psychographic – This focuses on the values, beliefs, and interests of your customers.
  • Behavioural – This looks at your customers’ browsing history, brand loyalty, and purchasing habits.

Reaching Out to Your Target Audience

Once you have clearly identified your target audience, you want to choose the correct platform and way to engage with your audience. You can use social media to post on platforms that your target audience uses the most. This will give you a higher chance of reaching your audience if you are posting on platforms they are actively using.

Another great technique is search engine optimization. You can optimize your website with keywords that your target audience may search for- this means that when your audience is looking for something, your website has a higher chance of reaching them.

Email marketing is great if you want to send personalised emails and direct updates to your customers and subscribers. To make this more effective, you want to use the same language and tone as your audience to make them more interested.

Finally, you must provide value and knowledge to your customers; this can be done by posting helpful blogs and insightful videos. This is a great way to show your audience you care about them and want to help educate them on anything extra they may want to know.
